A short piece by John Farrell, the author of The Day Without Yesterday, about the forgotten founder of modern cosmology, Georges Lemaître. Lemaître was a Belgian priest who was expert in both physics and astronomy. Lemaître reasoned that a static universe was not compatible with General Relativity, and instead proposed an expanding universe. At first this idea was treated with contempt and derision, the name ‘Big Bang’ intended as a mockery. But eventually, observational evidence such as the Hubble redshift would prove Lemaître correct.

I’ll have to add this book to my reading list.
